Many thanks in your interest in the UK Texas Exes!
We get lots of email from Exes and friends from around the world on a regular basis, we are ALWAYS glad to welcome new members, but before you send an email to us, here are a few few quick facts about UKTE:
UKTE is a social club, organized by volunteers and with limited resources.
We charge no local chapter dues and "membership" is via our email distribution list
Membership is open to virtually EVERYONE, we have loads of members that have never been to Austin.
If you are a UT-Austin alumni, we encourage you to sign up as a "Proper Ex" through the Ex-Students Association in Austin, of which we are a formally chartered chapter
We proudly donate part of the proceeds to our UKTE Chapter Scholarship Fund, which financially assists UK residents - including US Ex-pats - to attend UT-Austin
You always welcome to network at our events, but as a social organization please do NOT send us the following requests, as we simply do not have the resources to assist you
Job Searches:
We do not maintain a database of what our members do and have no way of matching people up with job opportunities.
Here are a few UK-based work search job sites that may be helpful finding employment
www.topjobs.co.uk www.workthing.co.uk www.monster.co.uk/
FYI, Most of our members transferred here WITH jobs or on education programs, as finding employment in the UK and the rest of the EU as an American is extremely tough due to...
Work Permit & Visa Issues and Questions:
As an American "foreigner" in Europe, you must get a permit to work, which in most cases can only be obtained by an EMPLOYER
There are other ways to get permission to work and live here, but we CANNOT provide you guidance or assistance in this area
We recommend that you visit http://www.britainusa.com/ for more details
Questions on where to live, how to get an apartment, find roommates, finding the best schools, getting scholarships, bringing over your pet, or other general "Moving Over" issues
London and the rest of the UK is a wonderful place to live and work, but it is very expensive compared to the US and answers to the questions above are so subjective, we are really not in a position to make recommendations, so please don't put us on the spot to provide guidance on them.
The American Women's Club in London has an excellent web site that discusses many of these items, try starting your search for knowledge there
Finally, a personal request from the UKTE web site team:
During the UT football season...please do not include any info in an email that might even resemble a hint of the outcome of any Texas game, please. This includes things like (and seen before numerous times, sigh):
"I'm not coming, but what a GREAT Game!"
"We're coming anyway"
"What a great finish"
Any variations of anything like the above, such as trying to be cute and hinting at the wrong outcome (urgh)
A 2-page tirade about how glad you are that we beat the heck out of OU, A&M, Stanford or any other team we play
OK, all that being said....we really DO want to hear from you!
